Getting a Better Sleep

March is Sleep Awareness Month and Living Beyond Breast Cancer has pulled together some resources to help us all get a better sleep.  With the state of the world right now and with what is going on in many of our own personal situations, sleep may be something that we are all struggling with.  It’s important to realize that it is okay for you to be exhausted and in need of some rest.  Give yourself permission to be tired and relax for a while. The link below has different resources that can help to improve your sleep habits, your exercise habits and subsequently improve your energy levels.  Even a little bit a day helps!

ORCF Cancer Coaching Comes to an End

It’s sad to see the cancer coaching option coming to an end but the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation has created in its place a Cancer Coaching Hub.  If you have an appointment scheduled for March that will still take place and your cancer coach will discuss with you next steps.  If you have a cancer coach and wish to speak to them prior to the transition of the program, you are asked to get in touch with them prior to March 21st.

As of March 31st. The cancer program will be transitioning to a new Cancer Hub which will be a “one-stop” portal for cancer patients in Eastern Ontario, a single referral point connecting patients and their families to the many organizations offering community-based non-medical cancer support to people diagnosed with the disease.  This exciting new approach will bring together clinical care with community-based support programs to ensure more patients are better supported during their cancer journey. Whether that’s information on where to buy a wig, mental health programs, exercise, nutritional advice, and even who to talk to about finance and insurance support programs, the new Hub will provide information and referrals to these services and more.

Physiotherapy Prescribed Fitness Classes

Offered by Breast Rehab (formerly Haley’s Rehab) in Bells Corners

After receiving an initial assessment by an in-house physiotherapist, there are three different types of classes that you can register for, basic yoga, beginner strength and zumba. These exercise programs are personalized to each individual, with no more than four participants per class and will include feedback, guidance, and modifications for everyone. The class teachers use their knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and the nature of your medical conditions/restrictions to ensure a safe and effective class. Classes are offered on a 4-week schedule, will be 45 minutes in length, and will be taught in person in the gym onsite. There will be a minimum of 6-feet between each participant and instructor, and all participants will be required to show proof of vaccination before attending.

Basic Yoga:

The basic yoga class will focus on building the foundations of balance and flexibility. This class is designed for patients that are either new to yoga or are getting back into physical activity after surgery. This is a great class for anyone wanting to work on stress management, connection through movement, or mastering basic yoga movements. Yoga has many benefits including improving flexibility, balance, and posture.

Beginner Strength:

The beginner strength class is designed for patients with full range of motion who are ready to get back into a more intense exercise routine. They will focus on whole body, low impact exercises to start building your strength and cardiorespiratory fitness. Strengthening classes are great for getting you back to your normal activities, increasing bone strength, and improving overall body composition.

Zumba:

The Zumba class is a fun workout that is designed to get you moving, loosen up, and raise your heart rate. It incorporates dance and music into a lively workout that will change the way you look at exercise. The benefits of Zumba include improvement in cardiovascular health, neurologic health, mental health and more!
