Lymphedema Project

What is lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a build-up of lymph fluid in the fatty tissues just under your skin. This build-up might also be called an obstruction and cause swelling and discomfort. It often happens in the arms or legs, but can also happen in the face, neck, trunk, abdomen (belly), and genitals.

Breast cancer and lymphedema

Breast cancer treatment may places individuals at a life-long risk for development of lymphedema.  Early detection of lymphedema allows for early intervention that can prevent or slow progression of lymphedema to a chronic, more difficult stage. Objective measurements of both hand and arm circumferences is recommended to promote early detection and improve outcomes.  A pre-operative baseline measurement of arms or at least a post-operative should be a standard component of breast cancer care, which can be used to compare all subsequent measures throughout recovery and survivorship.
