What is the Kelly Project?

The Kelly Project is a collaboration project between Breast Cancer Action and Kelly’s Boutique! The goal of this project is to ensure that every woman having a mastectomy is presented with a certificate so she can procure a post-op camisole that will be at no cost to her.

Breast Cancer Action will issue these certificates to all women undergoing mastectomy surgery. To obtain a certificate, please call our offices at 613-736-5921 prior to surgery.  We strongly recommend that you make an appointment at Kelly’s Boutique to receive your garment before your surgery date.

About the Post-Operative Camisole:

Hannah_Top_2860_lingerie_overviewThe garment itself has drain management capabilities and it comes with lightweight puffs that will get the patient through to the time she is ready for an actual prosthesis. Patients can wear the garment home from the hospital as it offers some compression and will help keep bandages in position. The straps are easily opened for dressing changes and examinations. Women generally comment that this garment is soft and comfortable as the fibres are infused with aloe and vitamin E. This initial visit allows us to explain the process as far as timing to be fitted for the prosthesis and brassieres after the surgery and what we look for when fitting her. We have also found that patients who come in before the surgery and are shown the variety and selection of prosthesis and garments available find the process so much easier for them. Most are completely surprised at just how much is available!

The certificates are issued to women having mastectomies or complex, invasive lumpectomies.

History of The Kelly Project

The Kelly Project was established in 2007 by Diane Hayes of Kelly’s Boutique. It was named after Kelly Sauvé, Diane’s sister-in-law, who was the inspiration behind the naming of the store. Kelly was a vibrant 31 year old young woman whose life suddenly and drastically changed in 2002 with a Stage 4 inflammatory breast cancer diagnosis that would eventually take her life in February 2005. As an ongoing tribute to Kelly, Diane decided to start the Kelly Project.  This is a program that provides women with a post-op surgical camisole designed for women after they undergo a mastectomy at no cost to them.

Paying It Forward:

quotes2When a long-time employee of the Terry Fox and Campeau Scotiabank Branch, 8111 Campeau Drive in Kanata was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, her colleagues wanted to do something special for her. This woman beamed about receiving a camisole as a gift through The Kelly Project from a program offered through Breast Cancer Action Ottawa. When her colleagues asked what she would like, she said: “I want other women to have the same opportunity I did in receiving the gift of The Kelly Project camisole. This garment was so very helpful and instrumental in my recovery and everyone should have one.”

Heard loud and clear, her friends and colleagues held jewelry parties, bake sales and various other functions and were able to raise the very impressive amount of $3,682.00 for Breast Cancer Action Ottawa with funds directed to The Kelly Project.

What a wonderful way to honour a colleague and help others all at once.

Way to go, and many thanks Mr. Johnston and staff at Scotiabank, Terry Fox and Campeau Branch.quotes
